I have to agree that bh should not be used as a staple. I also think you should wait him out... and by that I mean choose a good staple pellet, and put only that in his tank for a week or two. Mine got stuck on feeders and super worms for a while, but I was able to get him back on pellets. Every day I'd put three or four in, and every day I'd have to scoop them out. It took about 9 days, and finally he started eating. I know its not fun, but you should really try to get him on pellets, it will be better for your fish in the long run.

Beefheart will cause fatty liver disease and will shorten your fish's life. Pellets like Spectrum or Haikari will be much better for the main food. Your Jag is not going to starve to death, so just let him get hungry and then switch him over. Crickets should be fine as an occasional snack, like once a week. BTW the only food I use is Spectrum, but it is your fish, so do what you want.

very good advice. i've been feeding nothing but hikari gold but have wanted to try bh again just to add some variety but did not realize that it should be used sparingly. i will cut back on bh and go back to my gold and add shrimp and smelt to the mix.

btw, any markets in san diego carry cheap smelt? thanks

Crickets are fine. try putting in crickets and floating epllets in at the same time. so then he will confuse the two and eat both! and put less and less crickets in until he is all on pellets!:D

My jag would never confuse a pellet for a cricket. hahaha that's funny

hi have you tried small frozen fish like whitebait or cockles, prawns or what about earthworms( nightcrawlers)

My Jag was small, about the size of yours and would only eat feeders, and the ocassional nightcrawler. Thanks to the LFS I purchased him from!
I hated feeding him feeders. So I quit feeders all together. All my other fish-Oscars, CK, Jag, FH, and plecos all eat Hakari pellets as their staple.
Your Jag will come around you just have to starve him out.
It was such a huge relief the first time seeing him eat pellets. Now my Jag is
9"-10" and loves pellets.
Also, I found that in the summertime when ther are june bugs everywhere, i'd catch them and throw a few in the tank. Talk about a feeding frenzy!

Well he's decided to eat frozen blood worm and brine shrimp cubes, freeze dried krill and tetra flakes. Though he definitely still has a taste for live food which I've been feeding flakes so that my jag gets nutrients and such... thanks for the help guys
