Feeding my Ornate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't seen my ornate eat in months. Actually I barely see him at all. But when I do he seems to be growing, and no one is missing. Yet.

I don't know if senegals feed diff. from ornates, but with my senegal, when he was a babe, I always fed him at night with lights turned off, and first with night crawlers whole little ones, or pieces of big ones.

Of course, he was actively seeking out food all the time, and i was always able to watch him eat.

Thankx for the reassurance that my little guy won't starve to death - I'm definitely going to hit the store and try some of your suggestions. I am pretty sure that he has been eating the food I put in there at night though, since there don't seem to be any left overs in the morning! I suppose he will just need some time to settle in before he will eat in front of me.

cenecker - I have been keeping my tank at around 78 but I think I might raise it a few degrees. It's just that when the temp is warmer, the planaria go crazy in my tank and it looks gross!

Hi guys! I'm new here..

luv4pets, u can try dis, it worked wonders for my own ornate: feed him small feeder catfish, e ones tt look like tadpoles. Den juz leave him alone, he will hunt for his own food. It gives him exercise and he'll grow v fast. Plus, u won't have any leftovers which may dirty ur water! I tried dis and my ornate swelled from 3.5inches to 7++inches in about 1mth. Now I'm trying feeder goldfish. My lfs said tt fish generally grow faster and larger when fed with live food. Pellets can only do so much. Good luck!!

personally, I only feed my bichirs during lights on because I enjoy watching them get active at feeding time.

Bichirs are super hardy and resilient fish that can adapt to losing eyes, fins, etc.. so in case night feeding isn't something appealing to you, don't start them on it from the get go.

Two days isn't much time to adjust, and some individual bichirs will take longer to settle in than others.

At 6", bloodworms isn't the best food, especially if you want good healthy form and growth. Focus on the above mentioned 'meatier' foods such as chopped up shrimp and fish and pellets.

HTH :)

Definetly...I shop for my bichir food at the grocery store, not the LFS, you'll save a lot of $$$$ as well.

Live fish are not the best diet only because the quality of feeders here in the US is not always the best. Goldfish and Rosies often carry parasites and disease, and moreover ussually aren't a very complete diet as they often aren't very well fed (if at all) at the LFS. Moreover, for captive fish I think live feeder fish are often too high in fat and protein, leading to fast growth but early death (obesity isn't good for fish either!).

He still won't eat right away in front of me, but he is definitely eating! He LOVES meal worms, if I leave the room and come back in quietly I can catch him woofing them down. So far he has just been eating meal worms, blood worms, and sinking pellets, but I am definitely going to try some of the other suggestions as soon as I can get to the store. Would it be smart to start raising my own guppies for feeders just as an occasional treat? I don't trust feeders from the store because they are usually sick and malnourished. What is the best kind of shrimp to feed?

-Thanks again! :)

My Delhezi used to do the same thing, it would be real shy when it came to feeding time and eventually became the runt of the tank.

However, for about the 5-6 months that I did have it, it would scavenge about and eat at it's own pace. I wouldn't worry too much they aren't stupid at all and will find food on their own. Give it some time if anything, it might just be getting used to you still.

Nothing wrong with growing your own feeders although its a pain in the ass and not really necessary when there are plenty of alternatives to live food...however if you're interested in breeding guppys anyway...go for it!

Bichirs love ordinary feeder shrimp, I guess they're called ghost shrimp or sth. Pale white or translucent. I see e lfs guy feeding pieces of shrimp to e young bichirs, juz toss into e tank n they'll eat..
