hi this may seem a daft question, but i would like to feed my oscar an odd earthworm out of the garden, could any body tell me is it ok and does it have to be cleaned first, if so how do i clean it.
Have had trouble with parrisites in the past "little white worms" when i had piranas and dont realy want the prob. again.
THANKS Simon.

hi Simon, i have always just plonked them strait in the tank, maybe rinse the mud off first?

I have been thinking about collecting a load of worms, putting them in a chinese tub packed with cichlid diet and various dry food to se if the worms wil load up, making them even more delicious! (for the fish, not me!)

hope this helps!

Thanks for quick reply, so you have no probs with parasites off the worms, this must mean the parasites in my tank were coming from somewhere else, i was brand new in fish at the time and have since been told that over feeding can cause these little worms.
I have also heard you can feed them dried dog food.

do'nt put them straight in make sure they poop out al the sand and gove them some caroteen rich food and then feed them.

thanks pal, how do i make them poop the sand.

You can literally squeeze the nasty bits out of them. Ive heard of using a pencils and rolling it from the head backwards gently, which pushes the stuff out. I used bait store worms with rays and manyc cichlids and have never had a problem. Just rinse them off. Do no use the ones from th garden if you spray weed killer or pesticide.

earthworms are very nutritious.. but i would not use the earthworms from garden etc.. there are numerous problems .. pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals that the earthworm is exposed to and if eaten could harm your fish...

...only if you use those things in your garden... I've been feeding worms and other bugs from the yard for years. Otherwise the risk is negligible.

If you want to culture earthworms, use red wiggler worms that have been bred for captive breeding / diets vs. wild earthworms. Red wigglers will eat your kitchen veggie waste and like indoor temps. I have a rubbermaid full of them...

i dont use any chemicals in the garden at all, so i think i will be ok.
Do you mind if i ask you lads another question:¬ are there any other fish with a personality similar to that of the oscar.
Surely the oscar is not the only one.
