Feeding oscars crickets?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed my oscars and other cichlids crickets every other week because i heard they contain calcium. My fish like it but im not a big fan, like stated i had one escape on me and heard chirping all night. I prefer to feed ghost shrimp to mix it up. I get a bigger response out of the fish and they cost about the same as crickets and are less messy. Also if they leap out of the tank they just die.

Lol I always find dead ghost shrimp in the back of the tank when I'm cleaning the sump. They dry out and become pink.

Always fed crickets and other terrestrial bugs to large fish, they are fine for them. I have never had oscars select bits of the cricket, if the fish is big enough it just inhales it, crushes it with it's throat teeth and swallows. When they crush them some bits of cricket fat come out the gills, but that is all.

Pet co sucks go to a bait and tackle shop you we'll get them way cheaper and they feed them there so there clean and cheap oh and they have othere things like Minos or crawfish worm meal worms wax worms etc so I'd check it out plus I know a fue peps that worked in pet co they said most there inventory comes in sick or dead so not sure how good inventory is

My old Oscar used to absolutely love crickets. I bought them from Petland. They have some sort of sponge thing in the cup with them that is supposed to feed them nutrients. That's what I was told at least.

Anyhow, I never had any problems with feeding my O these large crickets from the local Petland. My JD and large school of SD also loved them.

when i feed my fish crickets i usually buy a bunch at a time and keep them in a cricket keeper with carrots and other veggies to gut load them.
