RD I have learned so much from you! Do you perform at birthday parties? Mine is coming up and I would love to talk to you in person. :)

But seriously awesome thread, great info!

No problem, glad to help. Hopefully my comments on this subject over the years will encourage everyone to do their own research, and draw their own conclusions as to what's best for their fish over the long haul.

Loaded question: Do tell who has wild La Ceibas (to produce F1 babies) in the US...

Matt

All other things being equal, how important is diet in terms of colour development? Let's assume for a moment that my fish are of the highest quality genetics (which they actually are, because they're F1 La Ceibas imported from a reputable breeder in the US).

And thank you again for everything else. :) I started this thread to get a better understanding of the food I'm using and of fish nutrition in general and you have gone a long way in helping me with that.

My source didn't tell me their source, all I know is that these were imported as 1"-2" F1 specimens in mid-late 2012 from a breeder in the US, I didn't get a name. Maybe they were misinformed about the F1 part, I don't know, it's all second hand information trickling down.

Ordering myself some NLS Large Fish Formula 3mm Sinking Pellet for my 7"+ Cichlids... See how they like it since I usually feed them on Tetra Cichlid XL food sticks.

I would have suggested going with the 4.5mm floating pellets, as your Tetra sticks are floating. The NLS Large Fish 3mm (sinking) pellets may be somewhat ignored by fish that are used to feeding on a floating pellet at the surface.

I've bought both so shall see how they take to them. Will be good to see if their appearance changes at all. I know the Tetra sticks are decent, but upon reading, it's hard to beat the NLS range. :)
