Feeding our 'wild' Eel

These eels are awesome. Can you keep them? I know outside of NZ we won't be able too but you?

Yup, no problem with keeping them, they aren't rare or protected or anything. No reason you cant catch a small one and keep it in a coldwater tank. They are very hardy and slow growing, maybe grow an inch a year. You really have to escape proof the tank though, in the wild they will climb waterfalls and travel hundreds of yards overland to reach new water. Leave ANY gap in the lid and they will be out of there :screwy:

The stream also has freshwater crayfish and some native galaxid fish as well, but they are generally nocturnal and very shy. This page has lots of pics of NZ native fish in a local fishkeepers tanks. Afraid they aren't very exciting to look at, but they only live in NZ, so most people wont have seen them before. The Giant Kokopu probably qualifies as a monster fish though :D
