hey, is it safe to feed polys mammalian meat every so often? i ask because i have fed my senegal a few pinkies and he seems to enjoy them. is this safe in low quantities? like once a week?

Not good for the fish, and pretty idiotic IMO.

I keep my mice and rats for my reptiles only.
Why bother feeding pinkies to a fish that in nature will never see a mouse?

Then there are the other health complications involved...

I don't know that I totally agree with tokyogasmask. Mice are excellent swimmers and quite often have to cross water ways or fall in to them. I have never fed an entire animal to my polys, but I do feed them chunks of mammalian meat (beef mostly). The only thing I could see being an issue is the difference in mammalian bones and fish bones. Fish bones break down quite easily, as where mammalian bones do not. That might cause some issues.

the bones were my biggest concern. i know that many keepers feed beef heart (an unnatural food for polys) and the fish do fine. my sen hasn't had any problems digesting from what i can tell. just growing a lot faster! nutritionally, are they healthy?

fish dont process mammalian fat, its kinda like how we dont really process transfat. so im guessing it just stays around in their bodies affecting their digestive system, circulatory and otherwise, just cause your fish is fat doesnt mean it's healthy..

Trout eat mice, large Brown trout have been caught with squirrels in their stomach, and Arowanas eat birds in the wild. Plenty of people feed their carnivorous fish beef heart. I don't see how an occasional pinkie could hurt as long as it's not too big for the fish. I've thrown pinkies in my tank but my Jardini always eats them before the bichirs can get them. What exactly would the problem be?

id typically try to avoid it but as a once a month or so thing i dont see a problem

Plenty of fish eat things with fur, bones, and animal fat in the wild somewhat regularly. How many reptiles digest hair well? They should be fine as long as they can pass it.
