feeding really tiny fry...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not sure if they will eat the first bites, if they do sweeeet! All fry I've raised I started on brine shrimp I hatched w/ the yokes; seemed to grow them quick.

go to the lfs and get live brine shrimp...try crushing the massivore as well. Those little guys need to eat multiple times a day to survive. good job gettn em to hatch. I want a few :)

Just go down to your LFS and get yourself some Brine shrimp eggs, they only take about 18 hours to hatch. It is what I use when I have small Pbass fry. Make sure to buy several packages of it, so you can start another brew of BBS right after the first batch hatches. Another trick I use is to make several batches of it and pour the newly hatched BBS in ice trays then freeze while they are still orange and with egg sacks (this is when you want to feed the BBS to your fry or freeze because 8 hours after they hatch they have already consumed or used their egg sacks and therefore be much less nutritious for your fry)

I hatch all of my BBS in a two liter bottle I cut the bottom off of and I drilled and silicone a air line into the cap to keep the eggs moving around. Look on youtube and you'll find several DIY BBS hatching systems.

Hope this helps ;)

And just for the record and from my own experience breeding and raising pbass fry, crushed pellets or flake food ground up into powder does NOT work well 99% of the fry will not eat it and will starve. Live BBS IMO is the only way to go for pbass fry unless you want to loose most of them. I keep them on BBS for the first month or so and feed anywhere from 4 to 8 times a day... Also make sure to keep an eye on your water perimeters and get all uneaten food out. Because BBS are salt water they will die after a few hours in your fresh water tank, so again make sure to get all uneaten foods out of the fry tank. I do this using air tubing and siphon out all the dead uneaten fry.

Good luck ;)

Thanks for the info brotha.
They'll go after frozen brine shrimp no problem?? I figured the movement is what gets them but you learn something new. :)
I'm gonna freeze a bunch then so when I'm outta town next week my fish keeper can just cube'em.

Exactly! Now the first few days feed live a few times a day and throw in a frozen cube of fresh bbs in between live. Then after the first few days alls ya have to do is toss in a few cubes a few times a day.. Too easy! But I'd also recommend keeping a brew on and feeding live when you can as well. Its what I have done with thousands of baby pbass fry and have had no issues
