guy at my lfs, not owner says hes does that to his Oscars and Jack dempseys, feeds once in a while, just so he can keep them in his 60 gallon tank. I think this is wrong, i mean slowing feed to slow growth. idk about that:ROFL:

Ridiculous and cruel.

This is like when I managed at Petsmart. We would tell people how big something got or that it got too big for their tank and we would get a response of, "It doesn't have to get that big".

I think fish do need feeding a lot more sparingly than most people think, I my self used to over feed a lot! But doing it for that reason is sick, same old story of people wanting these type of fish but not having the commitment a MFK needs to keep them happy and healthy

There's a difference between feeding an adequate amount to keep you fish healthy and powerfeeding.

I, personally, feed my catfish sparingly in order to control growth. By this I mean I feed them enough to get a tummy bulge whenever their belly goes flat. I don't starve them. The reason I do this is because the catfish have the potential to grow fast enough to eat my other fish which is a circumstance I would rather avoid. My cats are in no way mistreated or starved, they just don't get powerfed.

I see nothing wrong with this course of action. However, I have a suspicion that the fish store is probably starving their fish.

Feeding sparingly is correct.

Not overfeeding to attempt to contrl growth, althoigh i do not believe it does, is understandable.

Feeding below needs to avoid growth is complete and utter nonsense. Fish will become stunted, deficient, and, ultimately not sellable.

Chicxulub is correct, all the best literature on our hobby advises feeding fish sparingly. Some fish (wolfs, Pacu, oscars and larger catfish) will gorge themselves given the opportunity and they will get an insane growth rate which to be realistic, is not entirely true to their natural growth rate in the wild.

Indeed; I've seen a shocking number of fish at various LFS that are so thin they look like they're in a concentration camp. It so freaking sad!

as long as fish's body has correct "substance" to it, then the feeding is adequate- even if sparingly for slower growth, right?
most of us are overfeeding & our fish organs would reveal that, if inspected. I know I am guilty.
