feeding too much?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Feeding our fishes are fun but we're putting strain in their health. We love to see our fish to be huge and fat, IMO, fat put alot of strain in the heart. Therefore, fat stresses the heart to pump more. What do you feel when you over eat? You feel bloated. Sameway as fishes.

neither did we

but now we eat everyday now dont we? :grinyes:

Humans are omnivorous, so we eat anything in the wild. You must know which ones good to eat.

How many times do you feed your fish in a day?

i feed anywhere from one small meal, to 3 or 4 small meals a day.

a bit of flake, bloodworms, beefheart, or plankton. depends on if i feel like preparing their frozen stuff (cutting it up in smaller cubes so i can monitor how much they eat and so they don't waste it.)

but what i mean is, at then end of the day you can tell that those guys aren't starving. their bellies are nice and round.

i don't think i'm overfeeding because i've been doing this since i've had them and they are all doing fine.

thank ya'll for the advice and opinions.

My view on this....

Fish in the wild dont get fed as much as they can eat a few times day, they have to hunt down their food, which requries energy expenditure and at times fasting for periods where there is little food available. Some of these fish will eat as much as they can "when its available" because in the wild they dont know where or when the next meal is coming from. In the aquarium we have to control how much they eat because the rules of the wild dont apply anymore.

Overfeeding is bad for the fish, and bad for your water quality. If a fish is eating too much, its also pooping too much and creating too much waste which your filtration and water changes need to keep up with!

If you must overfeed, then allow the fish to fast for a while before feeding again ;)

I've heard its actually recommended for large predatory fishes to fast for at least one day a week for optimum health ;)

when fish are young i feed 6 days out of the week once bigger and older i feed about 3 times a week

Fasting your fish aleast 1 day a week will keep your fishes healthy and happier.

i feed once a day , and then miss a day every so often. my one eel in the 90 is very active and social. when i miss aday he gets mad, and trys to jump out of the water when i'm sliding the lid open to feed, he can really scare me sometimes!! heeeheee i think that it keeps me healthy too

i have a hard time with the fasting thing becouse my fish are big time beggers. every time i do i make it until around the time i go to bed and turn the tank light off and they all start splashing and popping out of the water. i just have to hurry and walk away. i know it is the main benifit for them living in an aquarium and probably something they look forward to all day long, i know i got to keep them healthy though so i try really hard not to overfeed    .
