Whats the best diet for a monitor?

That's an open question which you will have different answers for depending on specific species, I guess.

Yeah thanks Alex, I would have never gathered that. :D Or are you just saying it in a term as that people say a monitors will eat anything.

Whole prey food items, for larger monitors= mice, fish, chicks, crab,

Smaller monitors= smaller mice insects etc..

There is a school of thought out there that an exclusively or almost exclusively rodent diet isn't good for a monitor. The argument is based mainly on it being a diet that's too high in fat, and that monitors don't eat such a diet in nature. These folks will tell you to feed a largely insect-based diet. While I can see the merit of that I can tell you that any of the overweight/splayed monitors I've seen were that way more because of inactivity and too-low temps than their diet. I've always fed largely rodents with good success.

Alex have you ever used any prepped food like the turkey diet, or do you stick with whole prey? I never tried it but I know there are guys out there who swear by it.

I tried it, and let me tell you....what came out of the back end was terrible... it was runny and a hassle to clean up. I prefer the whole prey item because its better for the animal and its easier on maintnance. And you are very correct about the high vs low temp comment being the biggest factor in obeseity amongst varanids.

I'd heard that about monitors on dog food diets but I always figured it was because it was dog food, and that the turkey diet wouldn't do that. I can imagine the mess though, I tried feeding chicks once which led to pretty loose stool, not fun to clean I can tell you. That was the end of the chick experiment.

Bet thats cheap. :naughty:

Actually it is alot cheaper than feeding dog food, turkey, etc... why dont you do a little research before you start posting unecessary comments that derail the flow of the thread....
