to me this is a hot topic with keeping piranhas as some believe they only need to eat goldies and some even feed their p's mice which I find realy sad
to me I believe it is ok to feed them live food once a week or two
but when I had mine it would be bloodworm everyday, shrimp every second day and every so often I would buy 12 goldies for 24$ and feed one once a week and usually after 12 weeks and there was the sole survivor He was so beutiful and had such long fins I couldnt feed him to my p's

so I guess the question here is, what is your view on feeding piranhas?
 
The goldfish "Sick" thing is all over-hyped IMO. If the goldfish is sick, you will likely see it. If the goldfish has ick and lives in the tank for months, your P's might get ick.

If you ONLY feed them goldfish, yes it is too fatty for them, and their life will shorten from 20+ years to 15?

I fed live monthly, mostly fed market shrimp. You can definitely tell their color when you feed them shrimp, but they arn't going to instantly die like everyone says.

EDIT: dont mind the rant, its obviously less healthy with goldfish, but I don't think its as bad as people make it out to be.
 
yes.. the no goldies is pretty hyped up. but just the thought of losing my P is enough for me to worry enough to aviod it. when i feed live, they have been qauruntined for 2 weeks before they may enter the tank. usually its hikari pellets, brine shrimp, and prawns. excellent colouration, and lots of activity.
 
i don't feed goldies (just in case) but i do feed live on occasion as a treat not as their main food source i will feed the cons i breed and the platy's or mollies i may breed because it is easier to keep tabs on disease and the fish i don't feed will be sold to my LFS.
 
Give them goldies as treats once or twice a week, but just don't feed them goldies as their main diet...
 
I feed Hikari Gold floating carnivore cichlid pellets as a staple about once every 5 to 7 days until they are full. Sometimes they will get occasional treats in between but usually I will just substitute a feeding with catfish or shrimp every now & then. I also give them bugs I find in the yard like crickets or earthworms once in a while. If I find something I throw it in & whoever gets it gets it.....
