Okay, just wanted to be sure I did it right. I mean intake I knew for sure lol. It's about 3 inches from bottom, but gonna move it up some cause its sucking up to much sand. Return is only an inch or so from top of water, but I would think that's sufficient.

Thanks for the help, as always!

Wow your rays eat a lot! How big are they? I have 2 small ones, retics I am told. They are currently in a much too small 92 gal corner tank. As soon as my hubby can make our floors able.to withstand the weight of the 180 we have, they will go in there. And then from there to to biggest tank I can fit in my house lol. There is 5 fish left with them. A mickey mouse, and four assorted tetras. All one inch big.

I agree, they have amazing personalities. I love 'em.

My male which is the casterix is about 11inch diameter and the female Rio tigre is about 9 inch in diameter. They are in a 300 gallon tank with a few friends. I have a foot long arrowanna and some vieja in with them. You have received a lot of good education and these minster fish keepers will not steer you wrong. I have the utmost respect for each of them and have learned a lot from them just reading post. Keep up the good work.

I think it's funny most the females have retics/orbs/"trash rays" too!

OP also glad your water seems to be getting better these guys know their rays...and just wait.. you'll be planning your own ray pond or 500 soon enough!

I'm so not sure how to take this post. So I'll just leave the first part alone.

I already visualize an entire basement fish room fill of huge amazing tanks lol. These amazing build threads on here will do that to you.

Oh WOW!!! Yes I started with retics however I have 2 henlei, 1 Leo, 2 Pearls, and a Hystrix to go along with my 2 retics. My tank is 730 gallons with a full auto water change system that changes out 100 gallons a day. I am looking at adding another 1000 gallon tank onto this system for more water volume. And unlike most guys my tanks are show quality and beautiful to look at unlike the tubs, pools and ponds that many monster ray keepers do just so they can have the bigger rays. I on the other hand want to visually enjoy my animals. I am one of the only if not the only person you will know that is successfully breeding retics so I must be doing something right! I have had 8 successful litters so far out of my retic pair! Even though I started out with the ugly brown rays they may not be as pretty but they have some of the best personalities of any of the rays I have ever had. They are by far the most gentle and non aggressive of the group of 8 that I currently have.

Ouch!

For anyone curious, I did it! 0 nitrites.

So, through my experience, I learned that doing 90% wc almost everyday allowed me to keep the water as good as I could, while still allowing the cycle to happen.

Although I did go about this all wrong, I thankfully was able to make it happen.

Hopefully, some newbie will read this thread one day, and know how NOT to do things lol.

My rays are fat and happy and healthy and active.

Thank you to everyone who helped me, with special thanks to the awesome Pete.

Here's a recent pic
