Good story. Glad there's a good experience once in awhile.

BTW, it's a federal law and it's 4" SCL (straight carapace length) which is the length of the shell from front to back.

Are you sure its federal? I know I can't buy them at reptile shows in NY, but if I go to PA I have choice of like 50 species of hatchlings.

But Yes here it is 4" SCL. Forgot the term for a second.

Always glad to have a good Petco/Petsmart story............before I deployed I worked at my local petsmart as a side job, tried to do my best to give good advice for all the reptiles, even gave out an index card with a link to this site...shameless plug, I know.

Side question...does your store let you 'correct' their care sheets?

Its a federal law, but i cant find where it says that its 4" shell diameter and not total length...

I don't even look at the care sheets lol or recommend them, i always give people websites and book recommendations

Those caresheets at petco/petsmart are pretty amusing. I need to inform my fish and turtles of how they're actually supposed to act. My spiny eel just forgot he was "non aggressive" and ate a fish.

So glad that there was another person out there taking the right care of their turtles. :)

Good to hear this. I worked at petco for a while a few years ago. It was a store in CT so there weren't many of these cases. But occasionally someone would come in having got them in chinatown nyc or on vacation down south. It was usually the same BS about how the person that sold the turtle to them gave them all the care info. Never really had a battle, but i can't recall if anyone actually bought everything they needed. Usually it was "ok we'll think about it" etc.

Great story though. The great customers like that really stand out.

I work at a PetSmart in TN. I'll start posting my rants too. People come up here with their itty-bitty turtles from FL all the time. In TN if you are caught with an animal that is illegal to keep the state will immediately euthanize it, not to mention the steep fine. This includes "rescues" if you don't have a permit. Most of the people I talk to do end up getting at least the bare minimum needs for their little turtles, so that isn't my biggest day-ruiner. It's the people who own fish, but are not "fish people." I'll post a link to my rant when I get it done.
