finally went ahead and set up my saltwater rig. Homemade 30g 24x18x18. I'm just using a small internal filter and powerhead for the time being.

Plan is to start cultivating some macro, inverts and such in this tank and eventually move everything over to the 120g next to it. I still have a couple tanks to build to make room for my freshwater stock before I can switch this tank over though.

I briefly kept a small salt tank years ago but did not have the time or patience to keep up with it. Hopefully aging a bit, being a bit more knowledgeable keeper now will make this attempt more successful.

Still have to gather supplies and equipment like a proper refractometer and some dry rock is on the way this week.

Nice start! Will be a fun new side of the hobby to explore. There is plenty to learn on the salty side for sure. Do you plan to keep a reef or just macroalgae?

I want to primarily cultivate macros to start with, then eventually make it an sps dominant reef. I don't have the proper equipment for sps atm....probably not any moment soon either. Most of the marine fish I want to keep would limit me to a fowlr/hard coral tank though.

Nothing set in stone though, still very early on with this adventure. Thanks for reading!

I agree many of the cool fish are not reef safe, which can be a pain. But still plenty of cool ones which are. SPS is ambitious, but if you really set your mind to it I'm sure you can learn! Too much water testing for me haha.

Yes I agree. A couple months ago my mindset was "I'll brew some saltwater, throw some sps frags under my discount LEDs and hope for the best!". But after doing some actual research I realize it would be quite fruitless.

I just don't find any lps or softies very appealing. Well kept sps displays have always blown me away.

I was fortunate enough in my youth to snorkel in reefs in the Atlantic, pacific, and gulf of Mexico. While reefs in Jamaica, Bahamas, and the keys were no doubt more colorful and diverse, I found the reefs of Hawaii so much more beautiful. Just miles of igneous dominated by reddish seaweed and lime green porites. Theres a snapshot in my mind and I hope to emulate something like it with my reef.

I was thinking of going darkside next time I have an empty tank. Scared of the getting the salt content right. And how to pre mix that up while living in an apt. Nothing fancy just a couple Nemos and maybe a Dory if you get my drift...lol

Lol I always loved the regal tang until that movie came out and everyone was into them.

You mentioned you were looking at some fish, which ones are they?

I'm a big fan of the apolemichthys complex angels. Dragon wrasse may be another candidate. This all depends on whether I'll have the 120 ready by next year though. If I decide to just stay salt with the 30, I'd like to keep a dragonette and a host of inverts.
