Got a baby albino O about 3 weeks back, that instantly came down with white spot, and signs of parasites; no appetite or anything. Treated it for 2 weeks, managed to rid the white spot (I think), but just could not get him really sorted.

So I took him down to my friends LFS, where after closer inspection I was told it was "one of those Chinese Oscars", inferring that they were mass produced and suffered all sorts of problems. In particular their eyes were a lot bigger, probably due to stunting etc.

Apparently my friend got the little guy eating, in a tank with other Oscars; cut to today and he was mauled by them and half eaten. Feel like I should have stuck with the little guy, but I have no idea if he died from being attacked or if it was one of the problems he had to begin with :(

That sucks man. I had a belly crawler pike that I foolishly rehomed and he ended dead the next day. This was a couple years ago and I still feel like a real douche bag.

Honestly you should of culled it imo anyway. Clove oil would probably been better than half eaten though. Survival of the fittest. That's how it works in nature. Honestly its just how the game goes. I buy 6+ fish at a time & usually only 2 make it even with enough space.

Yeah, at any rate I won't be buying fish from that shop again; pointless waste of life producing sickly, weak fish for profit.

I'm sorry, feel your pain. Gave two old 14" oscars to my lfs' indoor pond. They became to RTC food:cry:

It sucks sometimes. I just bought a house and I'm in the process of moving. I've never once in 3 years fed my Arrow head puffer a LFS bought feeder fish. Well, I've been shutting some tanks down getting ready for the move. Ran out of night crawlers and home bred feeders...figured one LFS feeder won't hurt. Found my puffer floating a day and a half later....

I bet a higher percent of fish live to adulthood in the hobby than do in the wild, though. So it's OK. Doesn't make you a bad person. It's not like you threw it over the neighbor's fence or anything.
