I dont find them to be slow growers at all.Pretty good growth rate in fact.
 
I have never had promblems with 1. It grew to 12 inches in a 90 and never bothered anything. Cool fish just outgrew tank. Had promblems with fighting when I introduced a few more though ended up keeping the largest. Grew from 2 to 12 inches in less than 2 years in a 90.
