Fei feng - Flag Tails

Please educate me and post some pictures of the fish called Fei feng / Flag Tail. I’ve seen some pictures of these fish kept with Aros on the internet and they seem to make good tank mates with Arowanas as far as I can tell from the pictures I’ve seen. Please share your photos and experiences with this fish. How big do they get? How fast do they grow? Are they easy to feed? Do they do well in groups of same species? How much should I expect to pay for them at 3 or 4 inch in size?

If I can keep a small group of 4 to 6 of them togeather peacefully I may buy some to put with my leichardti if they are suitable tank mate.


I have also seen large yellow and black striped bumble bee looking fish kept with Arowana but have no idea what they are called.

Just some quick answers
How big do they get? : I beleive they get to about a foot long

How fast do they grow? : I would consider them a slow growing fish

Are they easy to feed? : Alot of people have a hard time getting them to eat. They are mostly vegetarians so give them veggie based foods, although they will eat other foods.

Do they do well in groups of same species? : IME I tried keeping 4 together but eventually ende up with one. People have kept them in groups though. In the wild they school, but I think those schools are very large.

How much should I expect to pay for them at 3 or 4 inch in size? : THey are not that expensive, around that size probably around $20 depending on your location.

The yellow and black striped fish I am speaking of is not a datnoid.. The one I am talking about looks like a vegetarian type fish that schools, I guess Ill wait until I see an other pic of one then ask.

google tells me fei fengs get about a foot long and like plants.

they get very large, there are a couple 14"+ here on the forum. i've heard they will not tolerate others of the same species in a small home aquarium. as vanimate said, they do school in the wild though. they grow fairly slow from what i've read. i paid $25 for a 2.5-4" one. mine will eat alot of different foods, sinking pellets, waffers, flakes, bloodworms. they are very very good algae cleaners.

my LFS had an 18" one that was priced at $400 canadian.

Must have pics of the 18"er. Mine is 13" and only about 3 1/2-4 years old. So not that slow of a grower considering. they are known to be jumpers though. I had mine jump out of a 125 and I had to stick him in my big tank b/c of it. they will at least try to eat alot of different foods. I have seen mine go for anything from shrimp to large pellet (9.5mm) It can't get it in it's mouth but it will suck on it a little bit. they do wonders on algea though. I like mine and may look into getting another in the futrure.

the only real downfall of these guys is I have heard that at a certain size if not feed well they will go after slime coat and once they have had it you might as well get rid of the fish.
