Fei Feng Flagtail pair?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh cool always thought u couldnt keep a pair together...Do you guys think i can get two for my 500 g aquarium ? (Aro,30 x denison barbs, 10 x severum)

2.5" to 9-10" in a year and a half? Not bad for a flagtail. They look great!

Do yours rub their nose raw against the tank sides? Looks like they have the same spot above their top lip as mine. Just wondering if it's a species specific thing.

My flagtail used to do this as well, but for whatever reason, he has chilled out over the past year or so and finally let it heal normally.

I'd say yes. I've never kept a pair myself, but everything I've read from people who have is similar to the OP's experience. E.g.: http://www.perthcichlid.com.au/forum/index.php?showtopic=30278

Whether kept in small or large groups, Jaraqui show little serious conspecific aggression. During feeding time, multiple specimens may chase each other when grazing upon a small area. Fighting can also be observed when two Jaraqui of equal size enter within close proximity. Both will display, compare lip sizes and take turns jousting at each other. This behaviour usually concludes with no injuries and a clear victor. At times, the larger Jaraqui within the shoal can be seen breaking up these fights by chasing off the individuals involved.

Edit: Looking through old MFK threads, I'm actually now finding some conflicting reviews, so I'm not so sure anymore...

It could be a bit of a gamble.

There is a common misconception that Jaraqui consume the slime coating of other fish.
It's not a misconception, the explanation that Jaraqui concentrates on the spot on the rays maybe true but I had one suck on the side of a pickerel. Therefore, think the slime theory is true.
I was considering in keeping two together but just came back from lfs that had three 4"ers together. One was chasing the other two frequently that had fin damage. So I decided against it.

As the OP, I wanted to update. The bigger flagtail recently went through episodes of constant chasing and harassing the smaller. Then, they would get along again. I sold the smaller flagtail. Maybe it could have worked out if I had a tank MUCH larger than my 170. Oh..well.
