Would an overflow/siphon have enough pressure behind it to force water though felt without it just backing up the system?

Search for the filter sock thread. The OP did a nice job of contrasting felt filter socks with mesh filter socks.

You answer is: Depends on the flow rating of the felt which is related to the micron rating, the amount of surface area of the felt and the gph's that you are trying to run through it.

In any case I would design your system to have some sort of overflow bypass for the felt. My commercial sump will overflow the filter pad directly to the bio ball chamber if the filter pad gets too restrictive.

I've been going back and forth between different set-ups and I think I will just stick with filter socks. No I didn't know the difference in the types of felt. I was under the impression that undyed (though hard to find) would be fine. Either way it doesn't matter, I won't be using them. Thanks for the help though, it was much appreciated.

I use nylon quilt batting. It's $5.00 a roll and lasts a long time while still effectively catching most particulates.
