Would an overflow/siphon have enough pressure behind it to force water though felt without it just backing up the system?

In any case I would design your system to have some sort of overflow bypass for the felt. My commercial sump will overflow the filter pad directly to the bio ball chamber if the filter pad gets too restrictive.

There are polypropylene felt filter bags and nylon mesh filter pads that are sold for food processing. I ASSUMED the OP was referring to filter felt.
I've been going back and forth between different set-ups and I think I will just stick with filter socks. No I didn't know the difference in the types of felt. I was under the impression that undyed (though hard to find) would be fine. Either way it doesn't matter, I won't be using them. Thanks for the help though, it was much appreciated.
I use nylon quilt batting. It's $5.00 a roll and lasts a long time while still effectively catching most particulates.
Do you mean the stuff that goes in-between the layers of a quilt? Maybe? Or am I just completely ignorant
