Hi, ok so heres the story.

just go down to the next para if you cbf reading the story, so you can offer your feedback..

- about 115 Days ago, rays mated for the first time [woo]
- Male was still buging the female after, so I devided the tank leave thing female on her own.
- This was good so I could feed her directly more
- Fed her heaps, she grew over time
- after about 40 days she stoped growing and remained fat, [was curious as to if she was pregs or not and it was just the overfeeding making her fat]
- 110 days later, without her being any fatter, thinking shes not pregs, i removed the devider, and the male was on her straight away.
- Went interstate for 2 days came back, saw two aborted babys, they are about 3 cms big. have eyes, mouths, gills everything (but obviously still born)

This is the main part:
- Male has been on her and she looks damaged a bit, but nothing to bad, mainly just the rear of her disc.
- Suspecting she may be preg again, I seperated them as the female was always hiding and jittery (she never hides)
- Now shes not eating....

So is this normal? Do females take a while to get back into eating after a stressful period of time? (giving birth, mating again, etc)

If so how long have you guys had your females go without food as a result of stress? any tips?

Cheers

Sorry she lost the pups. Most likely the stress from the male caused her to abort the pups. Looks like they had several weeks to go.
Chances are good they mated again. She should start eating again soon.

Ya right after birth they sometimes take awhile to start eating and also is probably stressed about the male a bit. She should start eating again right away and will kick into high gear on the food shortly. If your tank isn't on a drip and you were gone for the birth the water could have also got pretty foul and also could have caused a loss of appetite

they about summed it up^^

i try to keep the males and females together during pregnancy, then the male will only get excited when she is ready to give birth. this can be hard though when there is only 1 female for him to bug...

Sorry for your loss.

I have to ask and please don't feel that I am being a smart *** but do you suspect the gar? Is there any chance that it preyed upon the newborns, killing them? I understand stillbirth and all but I am curious if they in fact were birthed "ok" and just couldn't escape the gars toothy maw.

I have had numerous successful litters with the male in the same tank all throughout the gestation and delivery. I have had one loss but it was due to an inquisitive bite from the mother.

Tell us more. -FM

I also keep the male with the female the whole time unless I'm planning to give my female a break. At 3 cm I'm sure they were also stillborn for that far into the pregnancy. Given it was the first pregnancy it is fairly common.
Sorry that they didn't make it

stressed from the male... happened to me twice now...

last time was 5 pups from a 12-13" female motoro

[]Cool tha is for the tips, I'll do another water change in two days.

Nah the gar wouldn't of done anything he only eats pellots only. If anything ,one of the parrots would of had a peck at it.

These pups were way to small to be healthy. There were 110 days and only 3 cms

and when u guys say takes a while to get backto eating, how long has that been for you?
