My 3.5 inch carpintis cichlid is a stunner. Im just looking to see if the black spot on top dorsal fin is the indicator as a female. Don't mind my shiny forehead lol

Very nice looking carpintis mate.
I honestly don’t know the answer to your question.
I had 2 carpintis that looked distinctly different in body shape. Venting was inconclusive for one of them d/t size. Folks here thought they looked M/F. The F looking one did not have the black dorsal spot like yours though. Once I separated out all the other fish one killed the other in a week while I was away in Australia. Venting the dead inconclusive fish revealed it to be male also.

Sorry for the loss man.

Yea I'm actually hoping it is a female as I have one tank completely empty and may refill next week with a divider. I have a 6-7 inch male in a different tank and want to attempt to breed these two if the one in the picture is a female.

I replied in danotaylor danotaylor thread as his looked like pair but sadly I was wrong and he lost a fish. But, both times that I’ve spawned them the females had a slopped forehead compared to the males.

Male.

Female, after he played a little rough.

How big was your female when you were able to determine the sex? The head on this one is a little sloped but still young.

The first pair the female was under 4 inches but when they start to spawn that early they generally don't achieve their full growth potential. The second pair(the fish above) I grew the female out to over 6 inches before introducing her to the male who was past 9 inches.
