Ok, I've got an update here....the convict I thought was a female has been guarding an area of the tank tonight, and has dug up a 2"x2" gravel pit on the left side of the tank (swooping down, and moving the gravel with his/her bottom)....the male and her have been sparring (lip locking, and doing circles around one another)......My blue acara keeps coming over into the area, and she usually swims right away when he comes near her, but has been holding her ground as best as she can. Is this a male or female characteristic? I'm leaning more towards the female side, am I right?!?!

sounds like you have a female, it is hard for me to tell from the picture you posted but if the fish is 2-3" then it is def a female. Female cons do loose there color when they are rearing their young.

Can you tell which con is the female in th pic below?:naughty:

Okay, can someone list the specific characteristics of a male and a female convict? I've always just waited for them to pair....... this would be helpful.

If I was a betting man, I'd say the left is female, right is male....do I win?

Males usually clean out an area for the spawn site, and I have noticed that they get really upset if the female doesn't appreciate it. My male usually killed any female that didn't appreciate him. Sounds like to me that the 2 males are fighting over territory.

The female is on the right, you can still see a little color in her dorsal fin. With my cons(3 pair in a 75 gallon) the female does all the rearanging and building, while the male mainly just stands guard of the territory. One thing though the 3 pairs are all established for 4-5 months.

Just have to keep observing, one thing for sure evilxyardxgnome has the best looking con I've ever seen. How big is he?

about 4-5", he is probably the most emotional fish I have ever had. I recently rearranged his tank adding more clay pots so that he wouldn't kill the new female I bought and he hides all day and only comes out to chase the female then goes back into hiding. I can see him peaking out of the hole watching me, which is a little strange.

i know im a bit late on this one but i think its a male...all three of my female convicts always have their orange marking on the belly (yes it does get brighter on some when they are in the mood) but the orange never leaves i can always see it ...yours doesnt seem to have even an opauqe faded orange so im a say male...
