Female convict cichlid question

How do I know when my convict is ready to drop her eggs? Her anal tube has been out for weeks and she looks pregnant. She is also showing breeding behavior.

Is the male around? The male should be around to help in spawning process.

Maybe add more hiding places to get her to her comfort. My convict was too secretive and would not spawn until more hiding places were added.

People say that convicts breed like rabbits. How come my pair breed once since I got them. It been 6+ months since I bought them

Going to go with it depends on the tank. I kept holy rock and flower pots in the tank. Couldn't get them to stop breeding. Once I removed the fry 3 days later I always had new eggs.

Probably. A very safe assumption. But eventully the fry would have paired off. Once the fry are self sufficent find them new tanks or as most ppl I know do. Use them as feeder fish for your bigger monsters.

The fry are like 1/2 to 3/4 in
I had around 90 fry and I gave away most of them I kept 10
