Female Festae Bars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"Y" bars are just as apparent in males as in females. Trying to use bars to distinguish location points is about as reliable as trying to use eye color to determine sex. It has no revelance in location. It's mostly an individual thing.
As for the lack of stripes.. Well I don't know what's up personally but have been led to believe that it's related to poor genetics. But stripes don't matter to me much, although I do personally prefer mine to have them but don't care if they're solid or partially missing. And as im sure everyone knows, this hobby is about what the hobbiest like. Not what others tell you to like, unless of course one is concerned about what is considered "quality" vs the norm or deformed.

Mce , it would be best not to assume the sex of your festae at 1.5" lol it's gonna be awhile before your gonna be able to accurately sex them.

Also if festae due have bars then you should be able to see a slight bluish/grey bars on the body. Then yes they will come and go with stress. But if you don't see any traces of bars then no, the prolly don't have any at all and will most likely not get them, ever.

Okay. Here is a pic with my crappy cell camera.

That's a female and she will never get barring. More than likely due to inbreeding across generations. Its more prevalent in Ecuadorian lines because they have been around longer and have been inbred more often then any other strain. They do not look like that in their native habitat. Anyone who says they have an F0 with no bars either is inexperienced and has been scammed, is a liar or is in denial. When Festae are stressed, they take on a somewhat neutral base and either display strong barring, or lateral line blotches wi/faint barring.

Although she may not get barring, I still like the look of her.

Though I agree with what bomillyiam said, I have to disagree with the barring answer he gave only because I have an 8" female that is almost completely barred, and she showed no barring to very little until she was around 7". I also have a male that is always barred and he too had nothing until he was around the 6-7" mark. And then again I have other females that have been beautifully colored and barred as small as 4".

Madness - I am glad you brought this perspective into the conversation. Here is a current pic of my female and she is still on the small side probably 3-4" eyeballing it. Glad to know that she may get some more prominent barring, but if she does not then I'm ok with it more to FP's point.

Hmmm... well I hope yours get barring later on because the "no barred" females festae are just plain ugly looking and pointless, like a flat chested chick with no ass ...
