Female Fishkeepers...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dont worry about it. People are judged about everything. On the flipside, theres men that are into female hobbies and things like that. People look at them weird cause they figure they may be ***.

I dont even know why people judge or make it feel like its wrong to do what you want. It all isnt really weird at all.

Its Awesome to know that there are lots of female MFKers! :headbang2 Keep it up ladies... and try to introduce your other female friends to this fabulous hobby aswell.
Hmmmm...... i wonder if there would OR could ever... EVER be an equal amount of females to male ratio in this hobby in the future???? :D
btw... im a male.

I know quite a lot of girls who keep fish but I know some of them have unisex usernames and avatars so they don't get sleazy messages from guys.

I guess they want to be seen purely as people who keep fish, rather then "a chick with a tank". You gotta admit it even on this site if a girl has a pretty picture on her avatar she'll get loads of flirty attention/pm's etc and while some girls are ok with that others aren't.

The most knowledgable fish keeper I know is a female and also my LFS has 2 females from a team of 7 so I don't think thats a bad ratio.

As for the women who were previously mentioned who are assumed to be, "dumb/non educated fish keepers" when they go to their lfs... I think if you speak to most people who work in lfs's they actually assume the majority of their customers who come in are uneducated fish keepers (regardless of their sex). I think in their line of work its presumed safer to assume ignorace as opposed to assuming most customers have a deeper indepth knowledge (we must remember most of their customers see keeping fish as some sort of equivalent or upgrade to keeping a pet hamster or similar)

I don't think you got any bites :eek::D:ROFL:;)

Anyway!! :) My homie Bstuver is an Awesome fish keeper!! So Is Hobby :) They have both kept Quite the Array of Fish!! And Aquatic Life in general... And both have had qutie the Tank count!!

And Both have had quite a few tanks at once like most the other Keepers here :)

But ya :) Add them to your list :)

See, I can understand having a neutral name/av - but then I changed my mind. I am a female, and I am proud of my tank :) I like being a "chick with a tank" I don't see that as an insult.

Noticed at my LFS that after some time and getting to know the guy that works there we've built up a cool relationship. We try to help each other out and things like that. He's more into discus and African fish, I like CA/SA so works out quite interesting.

Though, since I'm less than a year into this he still has more to teach me Lol.

Was quite random actually... Just got my JD's and was facinated with their ability to eliminate most of their other tank mates. Mind you, this was in my very first month of having them without knowing much about them at all (how I found this site was looking for info on them) and they ate tons of tiny fish that were in there. Funny when I think of it now.

That and the movie is one of my favorites.

Keep rockin girls. ONe day my girl will be a mfker. She is slowly starting to accept it. Especially since I dont impulse buy as much now. I just buy much more spendy fish.....the cool ones. I love seeing girls....especially when they keep monster fish.

When i got a job at the petshop about a year ago, i was surprised about how the majority of my aquarium customers were female. Used to work in another one in 2000, then there was more or less only guys, and maybe a girl every other turn of the full moon.
The hobby is quickly changing. Aquariums are getting cheaper, you can actually get fish that lives for more than a year, that doesnt cost a two month salary. You can go on vacation for more than 3 days without worrying if the pet will be dead when you get home. And you dont feel guilty if you forget to take it out of the cage for a day =p

I love this hobby, and i started to love it even more when i got a fish with some personality. Now i just need a Bichir...since snakes arent legal in this country, ill have to get a water substitute =D
