This is my first time breed a pair of jags. My female was in my 240 and I knew she would lay eggs soon. So I picked up a 100 gallon acrylic for her and if I could find a male. She's about 6-7" right now. We'll I found a male about 3 days ago almost same size. So I moved her out of the 240 to the 100 with the male at the same time. The 100 is already a established tank as I had a jd, green terror and midas/red texas hybrid. I moved all 3 of those in the 240. So in the 100 gallon it's just the jags. The setup on 100 is a 100 gallon canister filter and a aquaclear 70 and a 300 Watt heater.

Now should I put screens on the filters and also a air stone ASAP or wait for the frys to hatch and then do it? Any advice would help. Thanks.

I would say go ahead and do it now. The parents will be less aggressive/ likely to attack your hands when they still have eggs. When the eggs hatch though aggression def doubles haha! One fyi for ya though if you dont have one yet you might wanna get one to keep on hand in case things go south (can happen scary fast) beings that they arent super familiar yet (had a friend lose a rd when her red devils bred). Anyways congrats man you got a beautiful female there def post pics of the little guys when they hatch!!

Thanks for the advice. Already put a air stone in there. Once thing I did notice is the female is really scared of the male right now. He's not being aggressive toward but like nudging her on her side. I do see some fin nipping but it's only a bit. Is that normal? I have sat there and watched them and I don't see any aggression toward her or him. Just flaring they're gills and the apparent nudging of the male on the female. Should I put a divider in? Also seems like the both of them are not hungry. Haven't eaten anything since the laying of the eggs. Should I be worried.

From what your telling me it sounds like typical breeding behavior and sounds like the male is "testing" the female. One thing is if things go south between them you will def know it. What i always do when breeding top tier aggressive fish that were not raised together is follow the love door method (a divider with hole big enough for just the female to get through) in case the male gets nasty with her. But i see they are about the same size so that wont really work in this instance but i would def just monitor them and if the male starts getting real rough you can just drop the divider in and the babies will go from parent to parent. A fyi typically the peak aggression period that makes or breaks a pair is when the fry become free swimmers. Beings that the male is around the same size your female should be fine handling herself with him but i always like to play it safe esp when you raised the female (def makes the fish more special to me!). I am not trying to scare ya because typically jags are excellent parents but just want you to prepared in case the worst case scenario were to happen ( dont wanna see you lose either of em!). Def keep us posted on the progress and congrats man they should be swimmers soon!

Thanks for advice JS. I have read online and from what I am seeing it is typical breeding behavior. I have seen when fish bully other and it's not even close. I have been keeping an eye on her. She's just sitting up top in the corner while the male is free swimming. How long does this typical breeding behavior go on for? Also how long do I wait before the fry hatch so I can transfer them to a 10 gallon? Thanks for all your input.

No problem glad to help! Managuense have def been my favorite cichlid to raise. They all have their own personalities and never had two that were alike. Typically the eggs should hatch in three to four days, then it should take another 5-7 days for the fry to become free swimmers. When they hit that point you can feed them hikari first bites or baby brine shrimp. Is the male not allowing the female near the eggs?? or is she still swimming down and checking on them?

Congrats, my kribensis laid eggs about five days ago unfortunately my female killed the male shortly after, I blame myself because the male was a random pickup not paired naturally. So far female is doing great job with the 50 + fry:).

There's no 1 guarding the eggs. It's like she's up in the corner and he's free swimming. He'll sit around the eggs every once in awhile. It's like she's really scared of him but he's most of the time nudging her with his mouth and she'll sometimes flare her gills at him. But no lip locking at all. Maybe since it's they're first set of eggs it won't spawn or he didn't fertilize it at all. I'll keep this thread updated on the next couple of days to see if the eggs spawn. From what I can tell she didn't lay a whole lot. Maybe 50-70 at most.

Looks like a no go. It's day 3 and some of the eggs are white color. Is that a bad sign? I figured since it's they're first time I wouldn't expect it right away.

Update on the female though. She's still scared of the male and hiding in the corner and both are still not eating. Is this bad.
