You could also use an internal filter.
Whipser/Tetra make ones for 5-10gallon tanks and I dont think that this holds many gallons.
Or like dmopar said a canister would work fine. You could... Plumb it from the back?

Yeah, just stick your input/output hose in there. A sponge filter can be good too...

So, does anyone know the equation, to figure out how many gallons this is?

take it to your local college, talk to the math department; make it a calculus problem.

or you could just measure the water as you fill it.
