"Fence" around the tank top

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
On my 60g tank I have about a 10" wide glass support to give strength to the tank so I took some egg crate and zip tied a couple of pieces together and created a ramp to the glass. I built a basic canopy and I dont have a pic of the finished but I just screwed on a piece of peg board going length wise so he cant jump off the back. I had to take him out since he got the taste of fish and is in his own tank now but was fun to watch while it lasted. I loved it when he dove off the top glass and swam down.

will the wonders of eggcrate never end? .... LOL

Why dont you move the dock away from the edge of the tank? Or cut a wider glass brace? I cant see a turtle being able to climb around (not over) a horizontal brace if its wide enough. Or drop the water level?

thanks for the tip wold; but I want him to actually have his neck stretched out when he's basking..AND i want to keep the water level it's at(maybe add even more).. I may sound selfish here but..

danz; A CANOPY!! why didn't my stupid-ass think of that?! that is cool! are they easy to build? My neighbor is gonna help me build my tank stand but do you think he can do a canopy too?(just a box around the tank..)
wait how do you even put a heavy canopy on my tank..it has that plastic "bumpy" thing on the inside(all glass aquariums)

rleughgel; what the??! lol

fish dance; well i would but it's those suction type ones...
and I don't want to drop the water level..
here's someones video, exactly what Cola does..(they have tape on the top)
he just climbs straight over...sorry i kinda don't get what you mean by horizontal brace is wide enough.

i just thought of this now but..
i will open holes in the canopy for the electric cords, BUT..what should I do from all the tubing on the canister filter?

If you look at the picture of the canopy I made it was a very basic and inexpensive one. I use an 8x1x6, 8x2x2 and a 6x1x2. I cut 2- 4x2x2 and use those on the front corners and screwed the sides to it then about an 1" from the bottom on the side I attached 10x1x2 to support the canopy on the tank and cut a 48x2x2 to give the back support then attached a peice of peg board in the middle so he couldn't walk off the glass support to his demise.

hey how would I put it on the tank?

there's a plastic thing inside the tank but are they sturdy enough to hold a canopy?
the "bump" thing in all-glass-aquariums.

One picture of the eggcrate ($10.00 a sheet) cut to fit one of my tanks...

One picture of adhesive stick on hooks on my fish supply cabnit holding nets...(OK the picture didn't turn out use your imagination)

The hooks go on the outside of the plastic rim on the sides of the tank. streach a rubber band from one side to the other between each pair of hooks so the turtle can't lift the eggcrate but you can whenever you want to.

i agree with the eggcrate.
