  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
okay give me your opinions. These guys were ordered from Thailand so tell me if you think these are "high quality" red texas? They are 3". There are two different fish here. One more red than the other.

how much did you get them for?

Hmm well they could in fact fade....Iv had people sit on some for two years before they faded but still leaving some black fin.
on the other hand true "high quality thai SRT" are already red/orange/peach color mostly faded out.

how much were these fish? and what size tank are they in,and they look like they have the red gene in them...the gill area is usually the 1st to get the red color.

also feeding them the right food is a biggie. I of course use a good high quality pellet for the red color (Hikari, spectrum, etc)and Blood worms and krill I also feed them my vejas veggie pellets now and then, along with different live food (not fish! mealworms, crickets, flys) Never wild the LFS sells them so I dont worry about pesticides

20 per fish. He was having a special for 6 @ 20/fish. I have complaints about the transshipper though. I contacted the trans shipper days ahead of time inquiring about shipping logistics and he/she only responded when I gave instructions. The box had a lot of holes and the top didn't fit properly. It was "ghetto rigged" to fit. I had them to include one heat pack but being a cold day the poor seal along the top caused all the heat to leech and the cold water obviously seemed to really stress them out. 4 out of 6 died. 1 was DOA and the other 3 were very stressed and laying on their side. The other 3 died a day later. The water was really cold when I received them; much much colder than it should have been.

So all in all I paid $120 to Feng Shui, and $90 for the transshipping. I can't justify paying another $90 even if the fish were replaced. So I'm out $210 for two red texas cichlids.

I was actually at a cichlid show at GCCC a couple weeks ago and someone was selling red texas for $15. It was F1 Carpintis/KKP. He had small fry <1" that were born red. They were light colored however.

Also on Aquascapeonline.com there is a statement about red texas:

Important:Don't be fooled by other sites claiming they have red Texas and when you get them they have no red color on them. Ours look just like the picture. True Red texas are already red/orange when they are born and not black like other sites claim.

I must say the pictures on aquascape are the nicest ones I've ever seen. And interesting that he mentions that they're relatively peaceful.

I really think there are just a lot of strains of red texas.

I feed them spectrum, krill pellets, and blood parrot pellets (hai feng). I have each fish in a divided section in my 240 gallon. They have 24"x24"x12".

yes the ones on Aquascapeonline.com are very nice....but they never have them in stock...NEVER!!!! I keep track of all the RT breeders and suppliers. and online sites....and they have yet to have them in. I have not bought a RT from Thailand since I bought my pair..and probably wont again....not that I don't want to..but I have Enough Faded RT at 1.5 inch already in my tanks!!!! :):D;)

Grow them a bit. I see sometimes they have decent prices for ones that have already started the fading process on aquabid.
Who was the state side shipper. I would be pissed!
