If your trying to get a pair, you may be better off trying one male w/ a few females.

I just wasn't sure if I'd have that luck for a hybrid pair. The one male in one species may never look at the females of the other. Seems like even numbers would provide better chance. Unless, having a male of one species and several female of another is the key. Maybe?

What type of fish did you want to cross?

totally agree with you putting even numbers of both sexes of two different species would only increase your chances for species battles rather than pairing for hybridization and leaving only one option for a species to procreate which is the main instinct of every animal on earth would be the way to go

Indeed. Glad to hear a second response to the same effect. Thank you @gamerpond1 and @Butthorn.

I'd like to breed for some bartoni with good color and then cross that with bocourti. I may put firemouth with that as well but if the firemouth ends up just being tank mate that's fine too. I like the other two more.

Reason I ask bc im breeding a vieja syn to a kml and I new the f1 males wasnt going to b fertile due to the cross I just eanted 2 no more in depth. ...

Now that's a very interesting question, I'd love to know if you produce a fertile male, that'd be pretty awesome! The problem is the breeders that developed these breeds weren't/aren't very willing to share information. I'd love to see a data base that could tell you if any given cross would be fertile.
If my theory is correct, you only need 62.5%-75% purity to produce a fertile male, KML's should carry a fair amount of syn blood, who knows how much, you should definitely select a few males to raise up and test breed. Never know when you'll strike gold, I think you have a better than average chance. Keep us posted.

How do you know you won't get any fertile males? Grow out some males, if you get fry, then test them a few times. You may surprise yourself w/ results. I have disproved a few "rules" or theories, done the impossible according to some, in the short time I have been breeding. Good luck!
