Festae Aggression Toward Mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think 300 gallons is huge for a pair, even if they share it with a few other fish. If you have trouble, just put in a divider or something

I have heard people say there bonded pair of festae kill eachother. And a lot need dividers to prevent this. But then i see a lot of videos where they are living and breeding perfectly fine together. Is it very often they need to be seperated or only once in awhile. I'm looking to form a pair from 7 1-2"ers and then add them to a 300 with an ornatum pair.

I guess my question is is it more common to have festae's that kill eachother or live peacefully, taking into consideration they will be in a 300 with pair of ornatum and many convicts as dithers..

With my previous pair of Festae, I tried to raise a group and get a natural pair, but one female ended up remaining after they killed one another off. So then I tried to force several males on her which she promptly killed too. But once I found her a mate she liked the pair bonded strongly.

With my current pair, I was lucky and these two hit it off immediately. I've had no extreme aggression issues between them, but they did show a lot of hate to the Ornatum I put in their tank. Anyway, the point is that a long term bonded pair of Festae is possible.....now mine will probably kill each other since I said that. :grinno::grinno:

Balton did you leave the ornatum in there or have to ake it out. I know 300g is enough for one festae pair. The problem is, is it enough for a festae pair and ornatum pair. Also balton did you have anything else in the tank while your female was killing males. Like would she had killed other fish besided possible mate (i.e my ornatum pair)

At first it was in a 156 gallon. Later I moved her to a 135 gallon with a pair of larger Loisellei who took one half of the tank and that's where she hooked up with a double-her-size F0 male. My current pair are the ones who were in a 265g with Ornatum. When the Ornatum were only two inches the Festae didn't bother them but when they grew to about 4"+ is when the Festae didn't want them in the tank any more. Whether or not it would work with yours I'm sure you know would depend on your individual fish.

Balton do you know anyone with some festae fry right now? I think ima try it out and if it doesn't work ill get a 90 or 120 for the festae pair. They could work with that right?

Umbeeking was selling some about a month ago, not quite sure he still has any left. You could always pm him. I know Dan is selling some F0 from Rio Tumbes, Floridafish Direct sells F1 fry, and I'm not quite sure about anyone else.

Yea probably going with dan. But I would like to see some pictures of some people have bought from him lately
