Just how aggressive are they? Most profiles say extremely aggressive but I hear more personal stories about them being shy... are they just shy when young and then turn into bloodthirsty monsters? Is there a difference between the sexes when it comes to aggression?

Shy in regards to people interaction and when it comes to other fish they can be very nasty. They do start out shy when small but get nasty with size. Ime both sexes are nasty but lone females especially so for some reason. They aren't red devil, Midas, managuense, or dovii mean but they do have a tendency to be nasty towards others.

I would nt say aggressive as much assertive. Our female was shy as a juvi and much more personable as an adult.

She doesn't tend to start any fights but ends most. Most of the bigger fish realize she's not to be messed with and just don't. They get burned once and learn quickly to leave her be.

Once mine got to the 8in mark it was extremely aggressive and didn't flaunt with its mouth open like many cichlids do. Instead it attacked other fish like it would attack food quick and precise and without any physical warning.

I have a 3 inch festae that would chase his target fish relentlessly from one end of a 75g tank to another. After I removed the target fish, he picked another target fish and chase him non stop. At the end, I had to keep him with much bigger tankmates that he can't bully. Festae's aggressiveness is not just showing he is the boss, but to eliminate his target out of the tank.

Festae are very mean fish and their aggression grows as they get size. Males are far more aggressive then females. They grow pretty slow compare to other cichlids. I've always kept my Festae with much larger fish and they wouldn't attempt to fight but anything of similar size my males would try tokill or beat up on where I had to remove them

I have some festae juvies , I don't see much aggression as of now , partly maybe due to the hiding places and also due to their age.
But yes , they are fast and can nip fins...

Our female was far more aggressive than our male. He was a much larger fish too.
