Festae aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've heard of some being mean but as far as aggression towards other cichlids and fish not the same as a male. Females aggressiveness comes out during spawning and show more so with other cichlids when breeding in a tank with other fish. All the Festae I have kept and friends I met always had brutes of males. I kept Festae for over 12 years I just got back in the hobby and have both at the moment and male dominating the female right now. Awesome fish my favorite to keep but notice they can't keep up with the much faster growing trimac and Umbee but can hold their own so far

Everyone going to have different experience raising breeding fish in the hobby. Best thing is for you to enjoy them and experience them for your self as far as telling aggression in any cichlid m/f.

Growth is definitely slow especially when compared to umbees and Trimacs, but aggression is less than those species as well.

I wouldn't say they are as aggro as Trimacs, Beani, rtms, Dovii.

Our male was a beast and finally succumbed to stress from the female and our large male Argentea. We did get a years worth of fry though.

It's unusual and well known that female festae are more aggressive than males, not just during spawning, but at all time until the male outgrows the female by a significant margin. Festae are slower grower compared with Vieja, Midas and similar sized cichlids because they are picky eater.

So I guess bottom line for me, it doesn't sound like they would be a good fit in 300-400g aquarium with Syns, Regani, Herterospila (all mild Viejas), Oscars, Severums, pssiticus, Pearsei, Amph Lyonsi (mildest amph), Paratilapia, etc. Too aggressive, right?

We keep our 10" female (avatar) in a 300 with Argentea, Pearsei, polleni, Synspilum, and ornatum.

Each fish is different but with enough space (territory) it could work. Maybe not forever but with cichlids you kinda never know for sure.

I just commented on your other thread. Your stock list is massive, even for a 400g tank, at adult sizes. Even without adding a festae, those fish will eventually start picking each other off one-by-one as it starts to get too crowded.

As far as female vs male festae aggression, I'd done a lot of research back when I was thinking of keeping a solo female a few months back. All the forum posts and articles I had read led me to believe that females were much more aggressive than males. Of course there are always differing experiences and people who got the brute male, but most people seemed to have encountered many more hostile females than males.

My male was the boss of my old stock, but he was def not a "killer" at all. I don't have him anymore, but the small female I have is by far the smallest in my tank and she is very aggressive... more so then my male ever was. Most people I know and talk to will say the females are more aggressive then a male, on average at least, I'm sure there are a few crazy males out there too. This female is 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the other fish and she does not take a thing from them at all... only thing is the s-l-o-w growth rate... that is why she is so much smaller!! She has literally grown like 1.5" in six months.... The male grew way faster... she is abnormally slow, even for Festae.

These were my breeding pair. Had 2 massive spawns until the male went Hannibal Lecter and destroyed my 4th spawn and the femaile. Singularly and in larger tanks Ive seen females group well with other SA cichlids including green terrors. Check out guapotemel on youtube.
