Festae and Jag adverts (help?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi CODzilla. Looking at the pictures, the jag looks alright. Not too bad.
The festae on the other hand looks kind of washed out. I'm not an expert on festaes but I came across on the net that there are "fake" festaes and "true" festaes.
I have a festae and a jag living together right now. They seem to be doing alright. Not really agressive towards each other.
But make sure they are about the same size and good tank size. Here is a picture of my jag and festae.
BTW, this is a female festae and male jag.

The jag looks nice and is definitely a male. The other is a Mayan cichlid(Cichlasoma urophthalmus) and not a festae. The eye spot on the tail is an easy give away. It should be above the lateral line only for festae. On uros, it will extend well below the lateral line. For the record, there is no true or false festae, only festae or mayan. The true or false prefix is often used in conjunction with the common term Red Terror. True Red Terror being the festae and the false being urophthalmus.

Cheers Pike, I have just got a reply from the seller, he says it's a male Jag and a female Festae. I like the look of the Jag but like you I think the Festae looks too pale for its size, it's a shame because it's extremely rare for them to be available around here.

Now I have to decide if I want to try the jag with my 8 inch Oscars and Fire Eel in my 5x2x2, I have wanted a male Jag for a long time so if there was trouble I could rehome the Oscars I suppose but the Fire Eel set me back a lot of money and I wouldn't want to let it go cheaply.

Thanks for clearing that up greenterra. I am still in awe of your set up!

The jag should be okay with the oscar, my 14+" male jag gets along fine with a 11" Oscar. Mind you, they were raised together.

Just spoke to him and the Jag is in a 4ft tank with 2 Oscars the Mayan and a big Plec.

I am so tempted to get it, I know I will be pushing my stock limit but I am prepared to thin out the stock in my tank (see tank set up) to make it work.

What do you guys think?

Also if I add the Jag is it likely to go after the Pictus Catfish? They are both about 5-6 inches and the Jag is 7-8 inches. :nilly:

I have agreed to pick it up today.

Well I have introduced the Jag, he seems healthy but he's about an inch or so smaller than the Oscars and they are giving him a hard time, he has lost a few scales from his side. These are the same Oscars that were getting a hiding off a GT less than half of their size not too long ago.

The Jag has decided to take refuge in my large root ornament and the Oscars keep investigating but they aren't trying to drive him out but when he does come out they go for him. He's in there with one of the Pictus cats and he keeps giving the Pictus a nip as if to say this is my root now!

I'll get some pics either tonight or tomorrow when he has settled in a bit.

If I can get the Oscars and Jag to coexist i'm thinking of letting the Pictus cats, JD go.

the picture of the jag was gone when I looked. I don't think that's a festae. Tail spot is too big. Looks like a washed out mayan or false red terror
