Okay. I've attached three pictures of the fish. It's only about 1.5 inches, so still very small.

I think I'll call them tomorrow and see if I can take it back. It's a 90 minute drive, but they did have some plants I liked that so far, my cichlids haven't destroyed. Maybe I could return it for some plants.

From what I've seen Mayans are a pretty fish, too, but if I still want to get a festae I'm not going to have the room I need with the Mayan. I just want to be sure that when I order one online it is an authentic red terror.

I bought a few red terror festae from a vendor on aquabid. There name is WETSPOTCX. Gray seems to be a great guy to deal with and their fish are quality. My red terrors bought at 2in now almost 5 inches growing and healthy. His overnite rates are also very reasonable and the packing is very professional. I would buy from them again. Check them out. You will definitely get what you paid for.

Does anyone here have some full grown mayan cichlids? I've watched some youtube videos and looked up some pics on google, but I'm curious if it's worth it to try keeping the fish. Anyone have an opinion? Of course it will mean buying yet another tank!

yep, da's a mayan. and it is too small to tell their sex at 1.5". get 'em from jeff rapps, he has quality fishes

So I spent the last three weeks looking up info about Festae/Red Terrors and thought I knew all the ins and outs of buying one. I went to a store about 90 minutes away where I knew they had them and found some that were about an inch long. I asked the store owner (this is a mom and pop) for a female and he said they were too small to tell the sex. Truth is I don't think he knew much about the fish. I also tried to look at the markings to be sure I wasn't getting a Mayan and thought the striping looked right from what I read.

I get the fish home and move everything in my 29 to other tanks so the little (girl I was hoping) has room and the safety to grow out. I then get back on the Internet to continue my research to be sure I have the right fish and right sex (thought I was prepared going into the buy, but clearly wasn't). During my web surfing I find a site that says a festae's tail fin spot will only come half way down, while the Mayan's spot will go all the way. Of course my new fish's spot covers the entire tail fin. I'm bummed. I'll post pics when I get my camera charged.

Anyway, I'm now looking for an online source where I can order a female festae and be sure I'm getting the real thing and the right sex. Any suggestions on a store I might try?

Yeah, just a head's up...no way at that size would they be sexable :)

Yep thats a baby Mayan..... full grown Mayans can be colorful if you get lucky with a quality one, but Mayans will no where be as bright and colorful as a Festae.....
