Festae domestic violence...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah not cool mine did the same but as bad and now i have the divider in they just hide all the time but they are mates to each other through the divider but when i take it out they fight again

Sorry for the lost.

Ive been pre-warned about my Male Red Tiger too and am in the process of a divider while they are getting along.

She had deteriorated more over night and was hardly breathing, so I made the decision to put her down this morning. :(

OUCH!!

Ive always heard too that it is always good to keep other fishes in there with the pairs...

I have a 7" Male Golden Monkey on the near-side of the frys/mother, seperated by a clear drilled acrylic divider. Occasionally my 8" male Mota would ram the divider at the flowerhorn. I will wait until the frys are freeswimming so they can be on the far side and then I will put up the "Mota" divider. With a hole just big enough for the female.

I don't want to divide the Male on the far-side to be by himself, with no other aggressive target or perhaps solitude will drive him mad. This is just my theory or instincts. Either way it kind makes sense. I know I'm talking about different fishes, but I am not taking the OP's thread, I am simply offering ideas. Just substitute the Motas for Festaes or any other cichlid pair you have, lol.

Watching this male it seems he's trying to protect the fry from the mother.

That seems like the most logical conclusion in this case too. Its the biggest spawn they've had, and the first time I've left more than a handful of fry in there this long. Maybe removing the fry when they're younger before he gets too defensive is the key to keeping them happy...

Such a shame. Looked like she was a good looking female too. Festae's can definitely have an aggressive side to them. I am noticing more and more aggression with my guy too lately. So much so that I am actually contemplating removing him from the comm tank. Hope you have better luck in the future.

festae seem to be odd like that wich concerns me. i have a few festae pairs. so far nothing as close to a death but i give many hiding spots so if the female needs to get away she can. in my 150 i have the nicest male and female ive ever seen. they are my pride n joy. i keep the closest eye on them the male is 14+ and the female is 10. they get along great. but i know they can snap at any moment. this is another reason festae is so rare. you may have a pair that produces 5 batches of fry and everything is going great. one morning youl wake up to a murdered something and be finished. and we all know how hard it is to reintroduce a large festae and have them just hit it off. just some of the ups n downs of keeping the terror. good luck to all festae keepers. it is deff a challenge sometimes
