Festae finally breeding!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh ok , i hope for a good price. not no $100 - $150 + shipping , i only really want like 3 or 4 . thats way too much for me to pay at the moment. and everyone else over prices them.
I have to kinda figure this shipping thing out. I would like to be able to ship, never done it before. I dont know what the cost will be for shipping. But If I do ship the price per fish will be very reasonable.

Very Nice! I purchased my first Festae approximately 11 months ago. Unfortunately, I lost 3 out of 6. Fortunately, I was able to get a pair which just layed eggs on yesterday. I am excited about this pair. Also, I recently purchased an additional 6 wild caught Festae from Cichlidsoftheamericas.com last week and an additional 2 more wild caught from a seller in Hayward, CA. I think that these are awesome fish. I will try to get some photos and possibly videos uploaded soon. I really enjoyed viewing your posts and videos. I look forward to seeing more. I am glad that you decided to share your post. Keep sending the updates.
Thank you for kind comments. I love Festae as well. Good luck with yours. If you do post pictures let me know so I can check them out. Just post your link on this tread. I do not mind

Your fish look amazing... :clap
I will be interested in a few if you do decide to ship.
I myself have just learned a little about shipping, the experience was worth it. I'm not happy to admit it, but my first shipment all fish were DOA. A lesson learned & problem solved. :grinyes:

If you have a good LFS in your area you can ask them for the shipping boxes they get their fish in. My LFS throws them out & if I ever need any they give them to me. It will save you the effort on buying a box & lining it with Styrofoam. The LFS gets their fish in s Styrofoam cooler type container with the box made perfect for shipment.

So you will just have to get bags, rubberbands & heatpacks.;) If you're worried about your fish making it to their destination alive you can do a trial shipment by bagging & boxing your fish & leaving them in the garage/basement for the extent of the trip. I did this after my first shipment failed. I also got some tips from a friend that sells on aquabid.

Good Luck with your babies...
They are beautiful:hearts:

Jill ;)

Thank you Jill. Im going to have to get serious about shipping. I have had a lot of interest.
Thats good advice about the LFS boxes. Thanks, I never thought to ask . I will next time Im in there.

they look like my peruvian f1's. they're not that big yet but i have 12 and the parents have high body profiles the babies do not so maybe that comes with age. GL with the babies, im building a 220 for a breeding project with festae, posible festae,fh mix :P

Shipping isnt as hard as everyone thinks . The way I do it is put the fish in big enough bag or bags take an air pump and put the hose in the bag spin it to close the bag around them hose turn on the pump abd let it fill atleast half the bag with pure oxygen then place them in a bigger bag or styro foam box to prevent leaking just incase the bags break during shipping then place them in the box and ship them priority mail thru usps works just as good as express . I havent had a problem with priority as long as the weather is good but its always good to use heat or cold packs

OP....can we get more detailed info like your water params, how long did you wait before you removed the fry from the parents, did you leave any with the parents and how did they do, how many fry have you lost?...things like that please.

thanks
great looking fish you have

Temps are kept around 78 to 80, PH 7.5
The first pair spawned Jan 12th I removed only half of the fry from the first pair when they were free swimming, I left some with the parents. They are still doing well. This pair spawned first and have not spawned again.

With the second pair they did not get along at first I had to start them out with a divider. Soon they were showing signs of spawning. I removed the divider on Jan 20th they spawned on Jan 28th. I removed all the fry when they were swimming. This is the pair that just spawned again on March 12th. I believe that removing all their first spawn has something to do with them spawning again so quickly.

As far as losses, I have only lost two or three of the ones I removed, (out of a couple hundred) And unless they are being eaten, I have not noticed any losses with the pair.

I feed the fry newly hatched brine shrimp until they will accept other foods.
I feed my own mixture of flakes(couple different kinds),cichlid gold ,krill ,shrimp pellets and spirulina. I crush this up until it is very fine and mix it all together. They go crazy for it.

As for adults to get them ready to spawn I do weekly water changes of 40 to 50 %. I feed cichlid gold, Krill, Frozen mysis shrimp and blood worms, and earth worms once or twice a week.
I hope this helps. If you want to know anything else about how I do anything just ask.
