I'm thinking about doin the exact same thing as freebyrd =] I already have the 55, I'm probably only going to grow out 4 in the tank though. All I need now is a place to buy festae fry! Freebyrd, where are you getting yours??

from cichluvr on aquabid 10 frys shipped for 65$

Good news! I got a 75 gallon to house my 3 severums (if you had seen my other thread) and now the vacant 55 gallon can be my baby festae tank for growing out. What's the best substrate to use for fry? I was thinking some flower pots and sand, few fake plants...tell me what you think?

yeah i have sand in all my tanks including the one i grew out the festae in, sand is fine, and yeah have some flower pots or rock caves or something, enough for each of them to have their own little area and then fill with TONS of tall leafy fake or real plants so that there are as many site breaks as humanly possible, with these guys the main thing is for them to just not see each other, if you have it stocked with lots of plants they will swim all around in them and everything and can get away from each other's site easily

and yeah if there is aggression then a divider would definitely be a benefit just make sure that the water quality doesnt suffer from it because usually with dividers with that small of holes they tend to block flow a bit to the filter and circulation so put like a small airstone or something on the side without the filter

Before they died my pair had 4 broods one of the problems I've experienced with very small fish in large tanks is they have a hard time finding the food. I used Hikari's micro pellets and flake. The intakes on my larger tanks suck the food rightup so I switched up - 30 gal then 55 then by the years end 75 gal. then @ 4-5" gave them away.
