  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Did you bother to check temp., ph and hardness before and during spawn?

What's the origin of the Male and Female?

Lovely pair there VRWC. This is exactly wot im after. Do you think 180G will successfully house a pair?? Or do you think im asking for trouble as they get big?

Wayne

Thanks Jimmy. Id say definitely a 180 would house a pair. They seem to be slower growers than most cichlids Ive had so Id think you could be ok for a long while. The male is 3 yrs old and barely 10 inches, not 11 as I had put in the first post. I assumed his size and finally measured him before I moved him. They male killed 4 females over the time ive had him but finally took a liking to this one. The male has been in a community tank his whole life with just about everything including large red devils, freddi, breeding pairs of dovii and RTM simultaneously, trimacs, midas, carpintis, grammodes & lots more and was never a problem. Everything was fine when I added this last female until the fry hatched. Even with eggs they were calm with tankmates. When the eggs hatched one night, I woke up to every single tank mate dead or almost dead, including a pair of grammodes, a pair of jags, 10+ convicts, various catfish and more. I will never try and spawn festae in a community again.

Do U plan to sell any of the fry?

I have moved the fry and the pair to a friends LFS and havent talked with him in a month or so so I dont know the status of the fry. They should be ok and possibly an inch or 2 long by now, but with the cold snap weve had, I need to find out. I know he does ship so if I talk to him and soon and find out, ill let you know. There were only about 200 that made it out of the 500 or so that hatched. I moved some to a local university, several to a friend on here and he has the rest.

They were wild caught specimens from jeff rapps. The male was 3 yrs old (nov 06 I believe) and the female I got in july 09.

I didnt check any of these, but tI always keep my tanks at around 82, ph 7 and didnt check the hardness.

Cheers for the info mate.

I intend to set up a 6x2x2 180G and dedicate it to some festae.I have 2 options regards the Festae, i can wait for a local importer to do a rapps order an get 1m 2f from Jeff. Or a friend has some F1s for sale, which i could grow on.

Do you think there is much difference between w/c ad F1??? I would love some wilds but the F1's would be way cheaper for a group of say.... 10 or 12.

no, I dont think you, me or anyone else can tell the difference between WC, F1 0r F100. Green Terra has a good example of a festae whose original linkage to wild is unknown I believe, and its one of the better looking festae Ive ever seen. There is another thread on here (I think its the honduran jag post) where someone posted a petsmart jag that looks as good as any jag Ive seen...and in all honesty, I think WC fish tend to be less social than f1 or f2 etc. My festae werent owner responsive at all, for the most part and by nature are skittish fish anyways. Mine would always freak out if you walked up to the tank at anything faster than a snails pace.

Ok, so my friend that owns the LFS and was holding these for me allowed the male to kill the female...so anyone interested in a 10" male in NC? or have a female for sale that will ship?

To all those that pm'ed me interested in fry from this pair, I will be seeing next week how many there are and their condition/sizes and post the info here to let you guys know.

id personally go for the F1s just because of the personable factor VRWC has said, his pair were never really owner responsive like he said but the 1 remaining fry i have from him (frikin loser killed a lot of his siblings :() is totally owner responsive, he is about 2in now (maybe little longer, not sure) but ever since he (and his siblings) were only 1in long they were responsive with me, after i had, had them for a week or 2 and they related me with food they would always swim right up to the front of the tank whenever i came near and werent skittish AT ALL, oh and VRWC i forgot he still had fry, could you let me know what their condition is and how much he is wanting for them as i may get a few just to make sure that i end up with a female like i want
