Festae grow outs, growth rate and tank size questions....

220 should be fine. single specimen at least 100g. 150or bigger for a pair. keep a divider handy

Thanks VRWC, I'm certainly not planning on having tankmates with the pair!! Do you think having them breed at a smaller size slowed their growth rate?

no problem. I havent really been interested in breeding pairs they way I am now and in all honesty, never payed attention to their growth rate when my fish spawned under 6 inches or so, so I wouldnt have a personal answer for you on that. According to everyone else though, it stunts their growth spawning at such an early age.

In retrospect, Ive had spawning Dovii & RTM at around 4 inches and they all grew to what I would call average size and rate over the year or so after their continuous spawns, even after I sold them. The RTM pair I just got back from a local university after 18 months were 10" male and 8" female at about 2 yrs old.

I believe that spawning from a smaller size and continuosly does slow the growth rate but not stunt the fish.My festae pair definitely eats less when spawning. My female was 4" and male 7" when they started spawning.Female was 1 yr old and male close to 2 yrs. They are 3 & 4 yrs old now and 9 & 12.5"

I agree it just slows growth it does not stunt it. IMO fish do seem to eat less when spawning and all the energy that would go into growth goes into spawning.

I kept a breeding pair in a 135 for 2 years. female was 7'' male was 13'' before I moved them. I find that breeding slowed the females grown ALOT but the male had no issues with growth at all.
