Festae in Community

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been following his youtube channel closely, he is awesome!!! And yes I did see that. I think he said the big male may have gotten pretty agressive and I think it was at least 200 gallons. But I will double check his video. Thanks!

I have kept them in communities without problems, and a friend of mine kept two mated pairs in a large tank with mbuna (the tank was 220 gal).
The determiner will be the size of the tank, anything smaller than 6ft or more I doubt will be successful.

I have a 125 (6 ft) with pair of Labiatus and synspilum
Might work, but when I try picturing all those fish at full adult size in my head the tank seems kind of small.

I have heard that a male Festae can get 16". 1 6 foot 125 is about 18" wide...

But if you kept just a female they stay smaller. But devils & synspilum are big fish as well.

Hard to say.

My Festae is in with all my other cichlids. He does fine with them, he's pretty small compared to most of the others though. This could be an issue later on once he matures a little bit more.

I don't personallt think it's a good idea. It could work for a while with a female but females can get pretty nasty, mine killed a few convicts and doesn't really tolerate too much more than the silver dollars, now that she is paired and has fry it's a no go lol. Males have a much lower chance of working. If you do it just be prepared to remove her and Keep a close eye.

I have the same experience with my 8-9" female in an 8 foot long tank. She started to shred all the fish relentlessly, except for the 12" pike which sets her straight. I had no issues in the previous 4 years.

I agree with MP, a 125 with all those large boisterous fish is a bit wimpy sized, and would be a problem.
If you had started them all off together as juvies, then it may have worked, but to add the festae later, or at different times reduces successful division of a fairly limited territory.
To me, a 90 is a temporary grow out size tank for festae, maybe until the male reaches 9" (about half grown).
