I see more indications for male than female, but hard to tell. The finnage and blue spangling on the body along with mostly green coloration indicate male. The barring is probably why most are saying female, but both my proven males display bars most of the time. I'm going to go against the flow and say male for those reasons.

I'm interested in details rather than just seeing someone say female. Back it up peeps.

I think it's a female.

Nolapete, as an experienced fish keeper I'm sure you know there's always exceptions to the 'rules'. Look at my female Festae's green face, tons spangles on her body and fins, and lack of bars. Does this back it up?

Yep, I always have to do a double take on your female. She's a beast.

My reasoning for female is the barring and the coloration of the top fin. However the fin shape says male to me a little bit more than female.

Stressed male's will display strong vertical bar's.
Fin shape? In many cases female's, of any specie, providing they have been kept seperate from "nippy fishes", will have finnage (trailing fin's) to rival those of any male cichlid.

And you therefore are correct, the dorsal fin coloration is the only true determination of male or female. I knew it was a female all along, but it was a trick question.

I've seen males that are so red and barred you would think they were females. Only the dorsal coloration proved otherwise.

The pair in my avatar (Katrina killed them) show perfectly this distinction.

I knew that was comin'. Humorous f**ker. *** Thumb's up***

Probably the best indicator for female in RT, once the fish is past the very young juvie stage, is the dark/black coloration of the first part of the dorsal fin. Never seen or heard of a male RT that pocesses this trait.

A high percentage of male A. festae, will poccess a similar trait to a significant lesser extent.

The fish in question apears to have the first part of the dorsal fin black, but the first part of the dorsal fin in the picture is down so, actually, you really can't tell for sure. Otherwise the fish has traits more typical of a male: yellow coloration, blue spangling, green on the face, and longer finnage.

The darkened, forward most portion of dorsal is certainly apparent enough to determine the fish in question is female. Female's can indeed poccess a great deal of irredesent spangling throughout both flank and finnage. Again, the colouration you (and i) would commonly associate with male, can and will appear strong in stressed female Festae.
I feel the fish is a recent acquisiton and is therefore rightfully displaying a stressed appearence.

Is this the same fish as captured in the footage of your Dovii?
If this is the case. Are you atempting to catch out Nolapete?
I must say i find it hard to believe this one is infact female. Please clarify.
