Festae & Mayan ~ Rarity

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Highly unlikely they're wild. There's a localized Asian variety that has intense red fins with trailers, big eyes and malformed snouts.

TOTE=HighBackRTG;5816098]No idea, they don't label fish with those labels.

I agree100%. I've seen a lot of them come over from Asia being claimed wild Ecuador too... Lol. Yes there are a lot of festae around right now.I am obviously bias and choose festae every time:) but that doesn't take away from the mayans, and I have seen less and less being posted but I still see them in lfs all the way up here in Alaska being labeled "red terrors". While festae may not be rare, tryin to find good quality is. And when u do its expensive. I know there are nice looking festae for cheaper prices, but thats all theyll be is nice. I personally want GREAT not just nice. And I don't mind paying as long as I know what I'm getting.

Oh, I know. I bought my festae a couple months ago for $25. He was only an inch, I asked the store owner why is it so expensive. He said their "wild caught''. I didn't believe him, but now my festae is 2.5 inches he has a lot of green and red for his size. My festae also has a perfect shape, no deformities.

I still personally like the mayan better because IME they have way more personality. Some mayans are very colorful too.

Great fish for next to nothing, Duane!

For the life of me, I just don't know why more folks don't get involved in fish clubs like GCCA...

Matt

At the gcca cichlid classic in Chicago last weekend, small festae were going for a buck or 2 each. There were 3 or 4 bags of half dozen per bag that went for $10 or under, in the 3 hours I was at the auction.
I got a bag of 5 bartoni for $2, and a bag of 6 Tomocichla seiboldi for $2. Definitely worth the trip. It's Memorial day weekend every year.

Also picked up 20 Guianacara geayi

I have never seen either one offered here in Fl and i have 4 lps in a 2 mile radius. My Mayan i caught in a drainage ditch behind my local mall.
in Florida it's almost a given that Mayan's will be more common than Festae, seeing that Mayan's can be caught almost everywhere in Florida.

Hmm, check out my thread on supposed Festaes, lol. These could be the "Asian Festae" because its clearly a Flowerhorn mix.
