Festae or Mayan??? fixed

just bumping this up, and not to hijack, is a mayan a red Terror. at my lfs they have festae fry and mayan fry. Wrote on tank is red terror/festae/mayan. one is looking like the OP pics and the other is the more orangish red.

Well festae are what people consider a red terror but to my knowledge red terror could mean one or the other. I believe that's why people prefer they be called Mayan or festae.

The term "red terror" is interchangeable with both xCichlasoma festae, or uropthalmus.
To determine in a photo with any certainty whether male or female, the dorsal fin would need to be extended. Females have a dark area there.

Are those spots on the outside of the tank or does it have HITH? Mayans seem to be even more vulnerable than oscars when it comes to HITH.

For the record Mayan & Festae aren't both considered red terrors .. The only reason Mayan is in that category is because of the similar markings and low end pet stores pass Mayans off as red terrors hence why you hear true red terror when referring to a festae .. But that is a Mayan, the two lines closest to the gill plates form a y shape instead of all vertical lines 😉
