Here's a male I had, @ 10"-12" in normal coloration.

Mood, spawning behavior, and even a festae of the opposite sex in, or out of the tank can determine coloration.
Directly below is a female without a male in the tank.

Now the same female, withe the male from the 1st pic, in the tank
