Festae or mayan???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No doubt about it, you got a mayan. A lot of people keep asking the difference, so let me say the two important things to look for:

1. Does it have a Y shaped bar, first two bars from head of fish
2. How big is the dot on its tail, if its a dot near the top part before the tail
its a red terror
. if it has a dot that is large and spans most of the part before the tail, it is a mayan (like this guy)

Both fish are called Red Terror, which is why the confusion exists between the 2. If you go asking for Red Terror, you're liable to get a Mayan since they don't cost as much and are more readily available. Festae are Festae, Mayans are Urophthalmus. They're common name which is never used anymore was Mexican Tail-Spot. Mayans are sometimes referred to as False RT, and Festae called True RT. Since they're so similar to Festae many unscrupulous suppliers and LFS's pass Mayans off as Festae. We need to stop calling them Red Terror period. Continuing to do so hurts both species. Unless it doesn't matter to you which one you buy, if you can't differentiate, ask for advice before your purchase, not afterwards.

Yup, my own damn fault. Didnt do enough research. Read about the y shape thing and these fish seemed to have that, because I never saw it befor on a real festae. I didnt know about the spot which is way more obvious. Oh well, I found some true's, now I just need to find a home for these Mayans????

Doesnt a Festae have one more bar than a Mayan?

Yes. Festae whose bars are distinct and not washed out typically have 9 stripes on average sometimes 10 such as my female in my avatar. Mayans usually bear no more than 8. Female and male Mayans are identically colored at maturity. Festae are not. Mayans typically have larger eyes as juvies and a large centered and broad distinct eye-spot. Festae eye-spots are in the upper half of the peduncle and much smaller in comparison to Mayans'.

so if you got festae please show us some pics :)
