Festae or Umbii?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you want a fin perfect fish go for a solo male, if you want the thrill of breeding go for the pair, and although both are personable fish I don't think there the most personable species out there imo.

What's in the 240g, why didn't you mention that on all your other threads?
A saw a pals parachromis la cieba the other day, absolutely stunning male... Impressed me more than any rtm, dovii or umbee I've seen, pics really don't do them justice. A pair would do great in a 125g.

I would agree with dan518 I have festae and they beg for food but other then that want to be left alone. Not like some Midas / devils or even flowerhorns that enjoy fighting with their owners. Festae are great don't get me wrong I love mine. They just don't love me back I guess.
And to touch on the growth rate of festae a bit. I don't see them growing any slower than other big cichlids in my opinion. I have raised several spawns over the years and if the fry are well cared for, in the proper tank they grow pretty quickly.
I have seen fry go from hatch to 4 plus inches in 6 months and 7 inches in a year so to me that's pretty fast.

T TillmanCJ i think it really comes down to what you want. A male umbriferurm will be a completely different experience than a festae pair. Personally i love festae and have no regrets picking them. However festae pairs are a lot of work, you have to be very patient and always have a close eye and be ready to divide. I love the payoff of having a beautiful festae pair with fry and in a pair as they would be in the wild. But that's my opinion.

You've inspired me to go with the festae pair lol here are the parents of the fry I will be choosing from. What are you thoughts and do you have any tips when choosing the fry? Also give me any other tips if possible. This will be my first attempt at keeping a pair.

Do you have any pics? Also my brother is currently using the 240 gal for 16in mangrove jack before he puts it in the pond. Then I'll get that tank

Cool, I didn't get pics sorry.
Same as above, I kept festae years ago and found them in interactive tbh... Like having a pretty girlfriend with no personality lol.
Why not get a male jag, a big male will fill a 240 nicely in 5 years if you have the patience to get him up to 18"?

How big do they get?

And I'm not sure if you seen other threads but I just got rid of my male jag. He was about 11in. I definitely want to try something new now

12-14" TL none of the pics on Google do them justice...
My pals has the ability to fade his lateral strip out, the same way big jags and dovii can.... Lovely dark bronze gold colour...
