I would say you want to have at least a 75 gallon or bigger. I keep my pairs alone. 1 pair always has a divider nearby, but the other pair has never had problems. I've kept smaller festae w/ all kinds of South and Central american cichlids.

i would agree with 75g or bigger preferably larger but they are extremly slow growing if you didnt know that. so you have tons of time to upgrade. i got mine in november grew from ~.5 maybe smaller to like 2.5" and 2" now. so like 2" in 6 months.

I never experienced such slow growth with Festae. With frequent water changes, quality food, and adequate space, Festae can grow at a steady rate. I have grown 1-2" Festae to 6.5-7" in six to seven months. Sex of the fish and the amount of juveniles you keep together plays a role too.

You most likely experienced slow growth because of the tank sizes you startes with. Festae are definitely not an easy fish to keep. I recommend starting fry that small in at least a 55g which offers better water quality than those smaller tanks. You might see better growth rates, then upgrade them as needed.
