No offense but why would u look for and buy a festae if you no nothing about it? Its like people just hear the name and see one pic on the internet and just go searching for one without any research.

I know what an adult festae looks like, I know how big they can get and I know they can be aggressive, still wouldn't say I know much about them. I didn't specifically look for a festae either, the adults are great looking fish and I saw someone local was almost giving his fish away as he was changing stock so I took it.

Why get ride of it ? Mayans are great fish. Maybe not as colorful; a lot easier to take care of.

I compared pics of the two and as you said festae are alot brighter, the females colours are amazing. I also read that mayans appreciate brackish water, is this true?

They can tolerate brackish water and in Florida (maybe elsewhere) they live in it. They can also deal with a wider range of temps than festae.

Thanks, can anyone help me with the tail problem? Is there any way to fix it?

Just do lots of water changes and it should heal up. I've had fish heal by doing that. The fish looks great otherwise. Really nice Mayan. It doesn't look like a deformity. Don't cut the tail off. That is a myth that it will grow back faster. By cutting the tail off the fish has to use more energy and the more that's gone the more that has to grow.
Good luck!

It should heal in time . It doesn't look split right down to the end. Just lots of good food and water will make this fish beautiful. It will color up more if you feed him earthworms . They also love crickets !

Yeah protein will help. Worms and insects are the best source.

Thanks for the help guys, he/she was in a tank with some very aggressive fish so hopefully it's just been nipped, just looks like the cuts are perfect, doesn't look ripped.. Can anyone sex it for me?
